Painting is the perfect hobby for you if you are in a rut and wish to challenge yourself artistically. You may easily enough go to the shops and pick up all the required supplies and set right to it. However, knowing some basics might really save you lots of frustration. Taking a short program is a great way to begin. You devote yourself, and you'll have a guide to assist you. Each town or city will have different courses that are available, do some research to see what your region offers. One class that is great for beginners is when a professional artist operates a class from their residence.
I located an artist in my area that ran specific workshops during the year; you could engage in landscape painting, portrait painting, watercolour painting, and even abstract painting. The feature I absolutely enjoyed was when the instructor asked the students to bring in an image from home as the starting motivation for the painting. He went through the basic principles in the initial few lessons. He described the concept of the colour wheel, and explained lines, materials and shapes.
The biggest thing to understand is that anybody has the ability to tap into their creative potential. Everyone is artistic and everyone can paint. It troubles me when folks say they are unable to. It is important to be nice to yourself and not judge yourself too harshly. Painting isn't the easiest undertaking. It takes time to develop a skill, but if you give it the necessary time you'll make progress and shortly be quite adept at it. We are our own toughest critics and it is easy to get irritated when a painting doesn't come out how you want it, but you know what...get over it! If you are too close to something it can be tough to see the big picture. Take a step back from the work, give yourself some space away from the picture, and view it later with fresh eyes.
One of the extra added benefits of painting would be that the process of it is therapeutic. You can become incredible peaceful through the process of blending colours and then applying them to a canvas. It is overwhelming initially as you have an empty canvas and it is your decision what you do with it. One form of painting that I find is good fun is abstract painting. There aren't any predefined forms, all you will need to do is paint from the soul. Just smear paint where you want it and see what happens. Painting has not changed since you did finger painting as a child; it is still messy but a great deal of fun. You could even enter in the 'zone' and lose time. It is possible for hours to go by without you realizing it. I have never left an art class stressed-out. You can experience a catharsis that's good for the soul.
Many people run classes that fit in with working hours so having a full-time job is no excuse. You will get the opportunity to make something amazing if you're able to commit to a class once a week for six weeks. Why wait?
